September is a season of transition. As the light begins to change and we spend more time indoors, it's the perfect time to think about the spaces where we gather, relax, and recharge. That's one reason I was especially honored to be featured in Central Virginia HOME Magazine's Fall issue in an article about one of my favorite design elements: curtains.

The article, written by Margie Lippard, highlights a project that beautifully demonstrates how the right window treatments can completely transform a room. While furnishings and paint colors often get the most attention, window treatments are frequently the element that brings everything together.

I've often told clients that drapery  is more than fabric hanging beside a window. They create warmth, add softness, introduce color and texture, and help establish the mood of a room. Most importantly, they make a space feel finished.

Beauty and Function Working Together

One of the things I love most about custom window treatments is that they are both beautiful and practical. Every room has different needs. Bedrooms often benefit from heavier fabrics that provide privacy and light control. Living rooms and gathering spaces may call for airy linens or sheers that invite natural light while adding softness and elegance.

The best window treatments balance function with aesthetics. They should support the way you live while enhancing the overall design of your home.

Creating the Illusion of More Space

One of the design tips featured in the article is something I have practiced for many years: hanging draperies higher and wider than the window itself.

By extending rods above the window casing and beyond the sides of the window, the eye is naturally drawn upward. The result is a room that feels taller, brighter, and more spacious. It's a simple design technique, but it can dramatically change the way a space feels.
